Three mistakes businesses make when cleaning freezer seals

Before we look at how to clean freezer seals properly, we thought we would highlight three practises which are almost guaranteed to shorten the lifespan of your seals, costing you unnecessary money.

Mistake #1. Putting freezer seals in the dishwasher

Dishwashers contain chemicals that will attack the sensitive compounds that make up your freezer seal. You may not notice any issues in the short term, but you will find that your seals start to degrade much earlier than they should.

Any savings you make through convenience will be lost through having to replace your freezer gasket sooner.

Mistake #2. Using harsh chemicals on your freezer seals

Even hand cleaning your freezer seals can damage them if you use the wrong chemicals - or the right chemicals in the wrong ratios.

In general, you should avoid using chlorine-based cleaners, such as bleach, although very mild solutions should be fine (see below). Ammonia is another harsh cleaner that should be avoided.

Mistake #3. Removing stubborn dirt using knives or other sharp implements

Freezer seals are made from sensitive materials that can be easily slit or punctured. By using the methods to follow, you will be able to remove even stubborn stains without resorting to knives or other sharp implements.

How to clean freezer seals with chemicals
There are two methods we would recommend for cleaning your seals using commercial cleaning products.

The first would be to purchase a dedicated PVC cleaner. These provide effective cleaning using chemicals that will not attack the sensitive materials your seals are made from. Make sure you follow the instructions on the bottle.

An alternative is to create a very dilute bleach solution, taking all the usual safety precautions when working with bleach.

You should use no less than seven parts of water per part of bleach.

If you have a spare spray bottle, you could use this (making sure it's clearly labeled). Otherwise, simply apply the solution to the door seal using a sponge or soft cloth. Wait 30 seconds and then wipe down with a cloth. Work at any ingrained mould or debris with a soft toothbrush, and dry your seal with a cloth or paper towel afterwards. Repeat the process if necessary.

How to clean freezer seals with natural products

If you prefer a more natural method of cleaning your seals, all you need is a lemon and some water. Create a solution using two to three parts water to one part lemon juice.

Follow exactly the same process as you would with a bleach solution.

How do you clean freezer seals that still have ingrained mould spots on them?
If you have applied the methods above several times and there are still spots of mould showing, here's another strategy to try:

Mix together lemon juice, water and baking soda to form a paste. Let it set for five minutes. In the meantime, get a towel and place it underneath your freezer door.

Next, apply the paste to the stained areas and leave it there for two minutes. Using a soft brush, work at the stains. Your towel will catch the paste balls that drop off.

Save time: keep freezer seals clean the smart way

Freezer seals get dirty over time, collecting food debris and moisture as items are added and removed from the freezer, and warm and cold air mix.

Getting into the habit of wiping down your freezer seals every time you open the door will reduce build up considerably.

Combine this with a twice yearly wash down, using mild soapy water, and you will benefit from easier cleaning and longer lasting seals.
