How to replace a fridge door seal with a nice new one?

In order to replace your fridge door seal, you're going to need to follow this basic three-step process:

  • Identify the replacement seal
  • Remove the old one
  • Install the new one

Sound simple? Let's dive in and help with a few tips along the way...

How to save valuable time when ordering your fridge gasket

Some companies offer an online fridge seal ordering service while others supply and fit gaskets at the customer's premises. GasketGuy is the only UK company currently offering both options.

Sourcing your replacement gasket is the first step of the process in how to replace a fridge door seal and this can be challenging because there are several different types of gasket profile (e.g. dart, flap and lip, compression, etc.) and the profile measurements vary across fridge models.

We recommend you cut out a section of your old fridge seal as you can then identify its type and take measurements. If you prefer, you can arrange a GasketGuy engineer to visit your premises, inspect your gaskets and create an asset register to streamline future ordering.

How to Replace a Fridge Door Seal

If you are using the GasketGuy website to identify your gasket profile, it will help you to narrow down your options by selecting the brand of your fridge. Alternatively, you can browse by the type of profile or simply send us photographs and measurements of your existing gasket via email, WhatsApp or our online form. We've made it as easy as possible to locate the correct fridge seal on our user-friendly website.

If you are a fridge engineer, a large catering company or another business that orders a lot of gaskets, GasketGuy can also save you money with our trade discounts, bulk order deals and 30 day credit facility.

Removing your old fridge seal

Unless you opt for our fitting service, you will need to remove and replace the fridge door gaskets yourself. Fortunately, this is usually very simple, but it can be tricky knowing how to replace a fridge door seal without the right tools.

Once your new gasket has arrived, we recommend unpacking it and laying it out flat while you remove the old one. This will ensure any crumples straighten themselves out ready for fitting.

In most cases, especially with new fridges, you can simply pull the gasket out of its track at one corner and then peel the whole thing out. If it's tough to remove, a putty knife may help but be careful not to scratch the door.

In rare cases, you may find that the seal has been stuck in place using a foam adhesive. If this is the case, we recommend giving us a call so we can advise you on the best way to remove it. In older fridge models, you may find there are a couple of screws at the bottom of the fridge holding the gasket in place. Once you remove these, you should be able to remove the gasket easily.

Fitting the new fridge door seal

Again, this is usually simple as it is simply the reverse of gasket removal. Before fitting, clean out the track and surrounding area with your chosen fridge cleaning product. Next, press the new seal firmly into its track, starting at one of the top corners and working across to the other corner.

Alternatively, push both top corners into place first and work towards the middle. You can then move down the door and repeat the process with the bottom two corners.

Check the seal is even all the way around. If you find that a section has been squashed during fitting, holding a hairdryer at 20cm and blowing warm air over the area for a minute will help the gasket to expand back to the correct shape.

And that's it. Now you know how to replace a fridge door seal with a nice new one. Are you ready to order your new fridge seal now? Head to our dedicated page to help you find a fridge door seal and find your gasket or book a slot with a GasketGuy engineer.
